Code of Conduct - Nolan principles

Each local authority must adopt and publicise a Code of Conduct that is in line with the Nolan principles, these are:

1)Selflessness: you should act solely in the public interest. You should not act in order to gain financial or other material benefits for yourselves, your family or your friends.

2) Integrity: you should not put yourself under any financial or other obligations to others who might seek to Influence you in the performance of your official duties.

3) Objectivity: you should act impartially, fairly and on merit especially when awarding contracts.

4) Accountability: You are accountable for your decisions and actions to the public, and must submit yourself to whatever scrutiny is appropriate to your duties.

5) Openness: you should be open as possible about all the decisions and actions you may take. You should give reasons for your decisions and restrict information only when the wider public interest clearly demands.

6) Honesty: you have a duty to declare any private interests relating to your public duties and to take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest.

7) Leadership: you should promote, support and exhibit high standards of conduct and be willing to challenge poor behaviour.
